The East Norriton Township Open Space Plan Committee which consists of township residents and staff was appointed by the Board of Supervisors in April 2004 to develop the Open Space Plan update. This committee and the update are necessary to participate in the Montgomery County Green Fields/Green Towns Grant Program. This grant program approved by the voters of Montgomery County in 2003, has earmarked $150 million for continued open space preservation and trail development. Under this grant program, East Norriton Township is eligible to receive $1,127,921 from Montgomery County. Of this, $25,000 will be used to ward the cost of updating the existing Open Space Plan and the balance of $1,102,921 will be available for preserving additional open space and construction of trails which connect to Montgomery County Parks and County Trails. East Norriton Township will be responsible for matching the County Grant funds with 20% of the costs of land acquisitions and trail development.

The Committee held its initial meeting in June of 2004. The Committee performed an audit of the previous East Norriton Township Open Space Plan to assess the success of past preservation efforts, as well as, determined the need to update other sections of the 1995 Plan. The Committee then reviewed any remaining existing open space in the Township and prioritized the properties for possible purchase. The Committee also reviewed municipal trail and pathway construction plans for possible funding under this program. The Committee presented the Plan update to the County Open Space board in February 2006 and after comments are received from the County Planning Commission and County Open Space Board, the East Norriton Township Board of Supervisors will consider adopting the East Norriton Township Open Space Plan Update.
